Starting a Webcomic: Month Three to Month Five

I got a little behind in this, so I’ll wrap the last few months into one installment. This will my last installment as I expect the rest of the year will just be a slooooow climb.

Month Three

The big highlight was that Google finally gave the site a pagerank. I don’t really pay that much attention to it but at least having one makes the site bonafide. At least in my eyes.

Month Four

I starting submitting to webcomic directories and trying to get some various other links. Of the webcomic directories I would say Belfry Webcomics provided the best traffic as they showcase you on their homepage if you’re accepted.

Month Five

I started to get some decent traffic, mainly from StumbleUpon and Reddit. It really varied depending on how the community like the particular webcomic. I could have a day with a hundred visitors or over a thousand.

All in all some nice traffic boosts but I neeed to diversy my traffic soources, maybe do some link exchanges with comics I like or write more articles so that google can find my site easier.

Hanging around some of the webcomic community sites would probably be good also but at present I don’t have the time to be an earnest member of one of those site. I’d have to sacrifice some of my obsessively checking reddit time to make this happen and I just can’t do it  ;)

Conclusion

Social media can provide a lot of good traffic but unless you’re cartoon goes viral, it’ll be pretty up and down.  It’s worthwhile to concentrate on developing your search traffic also.

A lot of people use the ComicPress WordPress theme which allows you to have blog entries right below the cartoon. I chose not to do it because I really wanted to showcase the cartoon in a very minimal framework but I might have to re-consider this decision at some future point.

It also provides a way for people to directly interact with you through the comments section which can be a good way to build your audience. Anyways, check out the ComicPress theme if you’re thinking of starting a webcomic. If you have little technical knowledge, it’ll be a lot easier than most other paths to getting your stuff online.
