List of Webcomic Directories

This is not meant to be a comprehensive list of all webcomic directories;  just a list of the top online webcomic directories you can submit your work to.

I used a combination of the Alexa Page ranking and other factors to determine which are the most popular webcomic directories. If you think I’ve missed a popular one, please leave the URL in the comments and I’ll check it out.

Webcomic Directory Tips

Before submitting your website to these directories you should have a couple of things ready to make the submission process easier:

  1. Generally you need at least ten strips online on your own website and be updating the strip on a regular basis to qualify for inclusion. So if you don’t meet these requirements, be patient and keep working until you do.
  2. I’m recommending you get a membership at all the sites, it’s not required for all but it’s better if you have one so write down your passwords somewhere.
  3. Have a description ready for your cartoon. They all ask for one so take some time to figure out a good line that describes your cartoon and is catchy. The more interesting the tagline description, the more apt that people are going to click on the link to read your webcomic.
  4. You can also add a thumbnail that represents your  strip so create some images beforehand. You’ll need three images: one at 80 pixels wide by 80 pixels high and another at 100 pixels wide by 80 pixels high .

Now you should be ready to submit your strip to the webcomic directories in this list.

The Top Webcomic Directories

1. The Webcomic List: The most popular of the webcomic directories, this will be your first stop. You need a membership to submit a thumbnail image for your webcomic so get one. You’ll need to have a thumbnail  image for your comic that is 80 pixels wide and 80 pixels high.

2. OnlineComics.net: Next up on the list are these guys. For them, you’ll need a thumbnail that is 100 pixels wide X 80 pixels high. They also require a reciprocal link so add a link to their site somewhere on your webcomic site prior to registering.

3. The New Belfry Webcomics Index: No thumbnail is required for this site. Just have your webcomic title and description ready.

Webcomic Submission URL: http://belfrycomics.net/misc/Submit

4. Webcomicz: Have your description ready and you’ll need to use your 80 x 80 pixel thumbnail here also.

Final Thoughts on Webcomic Directories

Always use a valid email when applying for membership as you’ll have to confirm membership through an email the web directories send out.

Approval for inclusion is not guaranteed and it generally takes anywhere from a few days to a few weeks if your webcomic is going to be included so, as always, be patient.

If you do get included don’t expect a lot of traffic from the resultant link. There are thousands of webcomics already listed on these sites so traffic impact will be, in most cases, very minimal.

But it will help google and the other search engines start to profile your site and with any luck you’ll start to get some search engine traffic for your strip.

Submitting your site to webcomic directories is just one of the basic steps to getting more links and boosting the traffic for your webcomic. I’ll cover other types of promotion in future articles.

If you want to maximize your exposure on any one of these web directories then becoming an active participant in the forums is the way to do that. Don’t be all spammy but taking an active role is some of the forums can get you some new fans as well as expose you to some other webcomic creators and their work. Being an active part of the webcomic community is double plus good.

If you don’t have a website, you can always have your strip hosted on sites like Drunk Duck. Though not particularly a solution well suited for me, it’s pretty good if you’re very young or just starting out and just want to get some exposure without the hassle of setting up a website.

And that’s the scoop on webcomic directories. Good luck.

Update

The comic quickly made it into all the webcomic directories except for OnlineComics where it’s still under review. I’m guessing they have some kind of backlog.

You can find it listed on these sites: Belfry Comics, the WebComic List, and Webcomicz. Of these, Belfry provided the best traffic results as they prominently feature a list of new comics on their homepage for a few weeks.
